Warrant Officer 1 George Chinn, DCM
Warrant Officer 1 George Chinn, DCM, trained at Middle Head before deploying with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in 1964.
Chinn completed a tour of duty in South Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) from 13th March 1964 to 13th March 1965. The Team was supposed to act as advisors and observers. However, they often found themselves leading by example. During one ‘hot insertion’ close to the Laotian border, Chinn found himself lowered into a firefight. Finding the South Vietnamese troops, whom he was there to support, in disarray, George and his partner, Captain Rex Clark, took command, organised their terrified troops and secured the landing zone for subsequent landings of troops.
For his gallantry, Chinn was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM), and the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) awarded him its Cross of Gallantry and Armed Forces Honour Medal.
Chinn was subsequently appointed the inaugural Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR), working beside fellow Korean veteran Lieutenant Colonel Colin Townsend to prepare the battalion for deployment to South Vietnam. He accompanied 6 RAR on its first tour of duty in South Vietnam from 31st May 1966 to 14th June 1967, which included the well-known Battle of Long Tan.
During the heat of that battle, as D Company was desperate for an ammunition resupply, George ignored a ‘debate’ as to whether the RAAF helicopters ought to be risked for such an operation. Insubordinately, he ordered two choppers to be loaded with ammunition, organised other volunteers, and jumped aboard one of the choppers. When over D Company HQ whilst under heavy enemy fire, the ammunition boxes were pushed out of the chopper to the troops below.
