Dear Members and Supporters, Please see below an update on the proposed Environment Education Centre (EEC) at Middle Head/ Gubbuh Gubbuh. Mosman Council Meeting 5 March 2024The proposed EEC was before the Mosman Council on 5 March 2024. Much to the disappointment of the packed public gallery, the Council unanimously resolved to provide a submission supporting the establishment of an Environment Education Centre at Middle Head and specifically thanked School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW) for "their commitment to realising a Middle Head EEC." What is of concern is that the SINSW proposal includes the construction of a Covered Outdoor Learning Centre (COLA), staff facilities, student amenities and storage. Many of the public present at the meeting were outraged at the Council's stance on this issue due to the impact of such proposed construction on the precinct's environmental and heritage values. Overwhelming support for HPG’s positionPublic submissions for the project closed on 15 March 2024. HPG thanks all the members and supporters who lodged submissions with SINSW and shared their feedback with us. We also appreciate those who registered their support for HPG's position on our website. Mosman Parks and Bushland Association (MPBA) and HPG hold the same view on this project. You can find the submissions here: Community support for both HPG and MPBA's position: 90 people attended the public meeting on 21 February 2024, and a motion was passed by unanimous approval in support of HPG's and MPBA's positions. 94 people expressed their support (on paper and online submissions) for HPG's and MPBA's position that no new buildings should be built at Middle Head Fort. 50 people from the local community packed the gallery at the Mosman Council meeting on 5 March 2024, protesting the Council's support for the construction of a COLA and associated structures. 38 people have provided HPG with copies of their submissions to the SINSW online feedback portal, which, among other objections, specifically oppose new buildings at Middle Head.
HPG will analyse the 38 submissions received and provide an Outcomes Report. HPG will also continue to liaise with SINSW, NPWS and the Harbour Trust to reach a solution for the location of the proposed EEC that is acceptable to all parties. We shall keep you informed as to our progress in this regard.
