Dear members and supporters, In December 2023 we wrote about the proposed new development in the Sydney Harbour National Park at Middle Head. We incorrectly stated a January closing date for ‘consultation’ and community comment. The correct closing date for feedback is Friday 9 February 2024. School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW) plans to establish an Environmental Education Centre (EEC) requiring construction of a large new building (see image above) that includes a Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA), staff facilities, toilet block, and storage right next door to the Soldiers Institute at Middle Head Fort. To allow new buildings in the Sydney Harbour National Park the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) proposes to make a change to the statutory Plan of Management for Middle Head. This change would allow construction not only for the proposed new building but could also allow further development in future. Locating the EEC and a new building next to the Soldiers Institute will impact not only the heritage and natural values of the Middle Head Fort precinct. It will also require clearing of a significant portion of bushland to create an asset protection zone for bushfire management. HPG: Supports the establishment of an EEC in the existing neighbouring buildings at 10 Terminal, Middle Head on land managed by the Harbour Trust. Does not support the construction of new buildings anywhere on Middle Head – this includes NPWS and Harbour Trust lands. Buildings should be adaptively reused sympathetically to retain their heritage fabric and the environment. Does not support the removal of bushland.
