Dear Members and Supporters

Standing Room Only!

As you may be aware, HPG held a Public Meeting on Wednesday 12th April to inform the public of what is proposed in the Harbour Trust Draft Master Plan for Middle Head.

Although hastily organised over the Easter holiday, the meeting was standing room only with over 150 attendees!

Those present at the meeting expressed their concerns not only about the impact of the Draft Master Plan on the heritage and environmental values of the Headland but also the impact events for up to 2,000 people may have on the precinct, the environment and traffic implications for Mosman.

HPG's panel of speakers provided attendees with an overview of the Draft Master Plan and highlighted HPG's many elements of concern (see link to a summary of key issues below).

Mayor Carolyn Corrigan and Member for Warringah, Zali Steggall MP, also addressed the meeting. Carolyn Corrigan spoke strongly in opposition to the Draft Plan for Middle Head Oval, and Zali Steggal spoke briefly on the urgent need to secure government funding.

All attendees at the meeting unanimously passed the following resolution:

At the conclusion of HPG's Public Meeting on Wednesday 12 April 2023 John Wakefield proposed that the meeting support HPG's position as summarised in its presentation by a show of hands.

There was unanimous support for the conclusions below and none against.

Motion proposed by John Wakefield and seconded by Graham Kells.

That the meeting supports the summary conclusions in HPG's presentation as follows:

The Headland Preservation Group supports

Establishment of an Interpretation Centre in the 10 Terminal complex where the Indigenous, natural and military heritage values of the precinct can be shared.

The Headland Preservation Group does not support

  • Reorientation of Middle Head oval.

  • Relocation of the existing pavilion.

  • Demolition of the Guard House / Middle Head café.

  • Demolition of all Barrack buildings – examine the retention of one Barrack building for adaptive reuse.

  • Events of 2000 people without further analysis.

  • Urbanisation of the natural landscape.

HPG 'Open Studio –Veterans’ Stories' project

The HPG veterans project 'Open Studio – Veterans’ Stories' was held this past weekend in the Landship at Georges Heights.

11 veterans participated in an art workshop with renowned Melbourne artist Richard Lewer.

The workshop has allowed the veterans to share their experiences and challenges through art. It was a project enjoyed by all the artists and their facilitator Richard.

ABOVE: Participants at HPG’s 'Open Studio- Veteran's Stories' project embraced the chance to work with artist Richard Lewer to tell their stories.

HPG is privileged to have had the opportunity to share with the veterans their experience of participating in the 'Open Studio' workshop and to see and hear their stories. HPG is hopeful that this project will become a regular event.

The veterans' artworks will be displayed in the Landship next to Frenchy's Café on ANZAC DAY Tuesday 25 April 2023 following the Dawn Service, and on the weekend of 29/30 April 2023, 10.00 am – 2.00 pm each day. All are welcome to attend.

Warmest Regards,
Jill L'Estrange
