Dear Members and Supporters

Happy New Year!

This is an update on outstanding matters referenced in our previous email.

HPG Submission – Sydney Harbour National Park Draft Amendment to Plan of Management

In our last email (December 2022), we wrote about the Sydney Harbour National Park Draft Amendment to the plan of management to allow the construction of new buildings on Middle Head.

HPG supports the establishment of an environmental education centre at Middle Head. However, it does not support the adaptive reuse of the Soldiers Institute as an environmental education centre, which requires the construction of new buildings and associated infrastructure in such an important environmental, cultural and historic precinct.

Please read our submission here >

Since making our submission, HPG has become aware of a highly relevant document with design information that was not revealed when public comment was solicited. This document, a Schools Infrastructure Project Update for Middle Head – Gubbah Gubbah, from October 2022, reveals an unsympathetic design for a large new structure adjoining the heritage-listed Soldiers Institute that is completely inappropriate for such a culturally sensitive heritage location.

ABOVE: The Soldiers Institute on Middle Head.

The sense of place on historic Middle Head must be preserved at all costs. This is not just another school precinct with huge covered spaces and tarmac turning circles for buses.

We are reminded of words from the song Big Yellow Taxi, written, composed, and recorded by Joni Mitchell in 1970.

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot

Harbour Trust News

Community Advisory Committee (CAC)

The Harbour Trust has appointed a new general CAC on 4 January 2023. The previous CAC term ended in August 2022. A CAC has also been re-appointed for Sub Base Platypus, but no CAC for Middle Head, North Head, or Cockatoo Island.

Disappointingly, HPG does not have a representative on the CAC. However, Yolande Stone, who has been actively involved in the Mosman community and is a Mosman Parks and Bushland member, has been appointed to the new CAC. Yolande will be the only member representing the local community. We welcome and congratulate Yolande on her appointment, as she is very qualified for the position.

Please see details of the relevant appointments here >

Warmest Regards,
Jill L'Estrange
