Read a full copy of the report here ➞ HPG's major concern is the Harbour Trust's proposed demolition of the Timber Barracks at Middle Head. In the coming weeks, The Harbour Trust will refer this proposal to the Minister of Environment and Water for approval. Before the Minister makes a decision, the assessment process conducted by the Department allows 10 business days for public comment. The assessors take note of all submissions and welcome any information and stories that back up your position. Your comments will count. We will notify members and supporters when the submission dates are announced, so please keep an eye on your emails. Andrew James, Chair of the Veterans Committee, outlined a proposal for the adaptive re-use of the Barracks, particularly Barrack B1, as a Veteran Transition Centre. He spoke movingly about the challenges faced by men and women who transition from the military. They leave an environment where service is a central concept, and all their training instills in them a sense of purpose and commitment to their unit, equipping them for their roles in serving and protecting their country. For this reason, locating the Centre in the Barracks at Middle Head, in a familiar military setting, is important during the crucial first month of exiting Defence. Guest speaker, Brigadier Kevin O'Brien CSC (Rtd.), who has become a military historian and author of note, talked about his latest book “Long Tan Memories, Myths & Reality” and detailed the significant (and largely unacknowledged) contribution of the Royal Australian Artillery in the Battle of Long Tan. He also discussed how the Barracks at Middle Head were built for that regiment, stressing the importance of preserving their military heritage.
