We are writing to share urgent news that impacts the natural beauty, heritage, and public open space of Sydney Harbour. The Albanese Government has announced plans to partially divest 67 Defence properties across Australia, including historically significant sites in Sydney – including, HMAS Penguin at Middle Head. The purpose of the decision is to raise funds and reduce maintenance costs, but the true consequence will be the permanent loss of priceless public land and heritage. What's at risk at HMAS Penguin and Middle HeadHMAS Penguin: is a key part of Sydney Harbour's defence landscape and holds national historical significance. includes Commonwealth Heritage-listed buildings dating back to World War II. includes a beautiful and ancient Angophora forest, on one of Sydney's most scenic headlands. is not merely "surplus Defence land" – but public land enjoyed by thousands and tied to over 200 years of our shared Australian history.
Government plan could lead to development, not public benefitMedia reports indicate the extent of the planned sell-off: The Federal Government will reap $3 billion from the sale of sites, which include prominent heritage Defence land across Australia. Defence Minister Richard Marles has defended this decision but has faced widespread criticism from veterans, community groups, and opposition politicians for risking "the heart and soul" of ADF heritage. HMAS Penguin is among the sites flagged for partial divestment as part of an audit aimed at reshaping the entire Defence estate.
